Labia Majora Augmentation as a Therapeutic Option to Address Genital Ag ing and Promote Women’s Intimate Health in Family Medicine

Abstract:
With aging, the female external genitalia undergo structural and functional changes, including volume loss, tissue laxity, reduced hydration, and increased susceptibility to irritation and friction. These changes may negatively affect sexual function, self-esteem, and overall quality of life. In family medicine and primary care settings, such complaints are frequently underreported, despite their significant physical and psychological impact. The growing demand for intimate rejuvenation—driven by aesthetic standards and increased awareness of sexual health—has highlighted labia majora augmentation as a therapeutic option with aesthetic, functional, and reconstructive indications. aims to review and synthesize the available evidence on labia majora augmentation techniques, emphasizing their relevance in family medicine practice. A literature review was conducted using the Medline and PubMed databases, including studies published between 2016 and October 2024. The review focuses on the two main techniques: autologous fat transfer (lipofilling) and hyaluronic acid fillers. Indications, technical aspects, outcomes, safety profiles, and emerg ing regenerative approaches are discussed. The available evidence suggests that both techniques are safe and effec tive in restoring labial volume, improving tissue quality, and alleviating symptoms associated with genital aging and genitourinary syndrome of menopause. High patient satisfaction rates and low complication profiles are consistently reported. Despite promising results, the lack of standardized protocols and long-term data highlights the need for further research. Labia majora augmentation represents a valuable, minimally invasive adjunct in comprehensive women’s health care within family medicine.
